Writing for Pleasure Vs. Profit

I love a good Femdom story, but the shelves aren’t exactly plentiful. Why is that? Why don’t more erotic romance publishers take Femdom? I’ve heard it’s a tiny market and most women who are into D/s and/or bdsm reading prefer the male to be dominant and the female submissive. However, women aren’t the only gender reading erotic books. What about men who enjoy D/s on the bottom. Do you think there is a market to explore among male readers who enjoy a bit of bondage and male submission? Ahh, again it’s a tiny market, or so I’ve been told.

Yet when I blog hop and surf the web, I find numerous sites and blogs devoted to Femdom. Is there a way to tap into this rich market for life-stylers and kink? My own little Femdom story, Black Magic Woman, was billed as bdsm and some m/m in order to attract more readers. No taglines alluded to it being a Femdom story, although if you read the blurb, you would figure it out.

Like most women, I enjoy reading about a masterful alpha male who wants to find his loving female, but that doesn’t mean I want to read it exclusively, or that I want that female heroine to be a submissive. I want her to give as good as she gets and be his equal in life, if not his superior (she knows she is, but allows him to think he is the superior one in the relationship and in life, lol).

Online friend Joey W. Hill is one of my favorite writers, and has written several fabulous paranormal Femdom stories in her Vampire Queen series, and also one of my all-time favorite erotic romance Femdom books, Natural Law.

I have also read her angel/demon/mermaid series that is not Femdom and while I enjoyed them, Joey’s Femdom stories are my favorites.

But more and more writers in the sub-genre are switching to the male dominant hero and it’s market driven. I’m the same way. I can write what I want, but if the numbers aren’t there, and no one reads the book, then I have no incentive to continue being published. I can happily write naughty stories for myself and my friends for free, but what I want is sales in order to pay for the bills. So BMW (Black Magic Woman) may be my only published Femdom unless the market swings or shifts somehow. Which is sad in a way. But writing takes time and if I spend a month writing and editing a Femdom story, it had better be worth the time invested and make money, because that is time I cannot replace and might have been better spent on an alpha male story that sells.

I am always searching for good Femdom books to read. If you know of any, please leave a comment.

Until Next time…

Cass

    Cassandra,
You’re right. So many erotic publishers don’t have any femdom erotica. Some publishers, like Ellora (sic)’s Cave won’t accept anything but subfem fiction in BDSM.

Yet there have been some decent Femdom stuff written like THIS CHRISTMAS SHE RULES by Jennifer LEELAND and Mia Jae of Resplendence Publishing just released a FemDom novella.

You’d think the publishers would seek more quality FemDom BDSM stories/novels to fill a niche.

Oh hell, I can’t believe I forgot to mention Jenn Leeland’s books. I hope she’ll forgive me, since she’s also a good friend. I’ve read most of her work, but that one escaped my sight. Thanks for letting me know about it.

Jenn, hon, you’ve got another sale on the way.

Ooh, Mia Jae, never heard of her, but going to check it out now. Thanks, Ricki! :headphones:
