Shifting Tides: Soul of the Sea Songtracks

November 10th, 2008

A reader asked me what I listen to when I write and I wanted to share one of the songs I am listening to as I finish writing my third and final book in the Shifting Tides trilogy.

This song encompasses everything my characters feel…

romance, danger, passion, amor…

Oh my goodness, and these men are talented and hot!  ::fans self::

Gettin’ Some

November 8th, 2008

When I was a teenager, we referred to sex behind the bleachers as ‘gettin’ some. Now I don’t kiss and tell…much, lol, but a lot of gettin’ some went on at my high school in some very public places. Must have been a bunch of randy exhibitionists. Not me, though. I was a good girl. Stop that snickering! I was. I even looked the other way when I saw the sweaty bump and grind going on in some of the parked cars at the high school’s parking lot.

One of my best friends would ask me to act as lookout, because the school narcs would also bust your ass if they caught you gettin’ some.

When I look back, I think of those times as a gift. Why? Not because I am a pervert. Okay, maybe a little. lol. But I think about how rare an opportunity it was to listen in as my friend and her boyfriend of the hour would ‘get some’ in the girl’s locker room, parked car, or under the bleachers. See, as a writer, I want to capture and relay every sense to readers. That goes double for my sex scenes.

Every sigh and groan and moan and quivering whisper. Every shout, yell, or scream of pleasure. So many sounds. The slap of flesh on flesh, the muttered cuss words, and calls out to God. The time I heard my bff’s latest in a string of boyfriends cry out, “Thank you, Jesus!” like seventeen times. He and my bff only dated for about a month, but in a way, I guess that was good experience for him since later I heard he became a minister.  :)

I know some men really get turned on by dirty talk. But I’m not sure how many women are into the audio aspect of sex. So my question for the day is this?

Do you like to talk dirty to your man, and does he like it?

Writing As A Journey

November 6th, 2008

I’ve heard that writing is a journey, but what does that mean exactly? Does that mean you might as well prepare for an arduous, uphill trip? Or maybe they simply mean writing is like a marathon race, a long, slow road, with stops along the way to grab a cup of water?

So far, my own journey is more like a surprise, a box you open, and inside isn’t a prize, but another box, and you open it, to find yet another box.  And another, all of them increasingly smaller and smaller, until the very last box is so small your fingers and thumb dwarf the teeny box.

tiny boxes

But you open it anyway, because Pandora lives in each of us, that need to know what is on the inside. And inside the box is a seed, a kernel, perhaps even a bit of stardust. But just enough to keep us going, to keep writing,  keep trying.

Have you opened your boxes yet?  And when you came to the very last one, what did you find?

Sometimes the ghosts from your past can heal your heart.

Matthew Lambert should know. He tried to run from his past. When the handsome chef decides to renovate an old haunted house, he is forced to resurrect more than ghosts.

Cadence Martin has always been fascinated by the paranormal, especially anything to do with the lively spirit that inhabits an old Victorian house she’s loved since she was a child. When she gets an invitation to the new opening for a bed and breakfast inn and realizes it’s her favorite haunt, she decides to see if the new owners are aware they have just inherited the resident ghost.

Jim Croce in my head…

October 16th, 2008

Some times memories become so poignant, that music and songs from another time reach through to us in our grief and play their tune in our heads.

For me, it’s usually a song from the late, talented, Jim Croce. My generation’s songwriter/poet.

As I sit here today and wonder how in the world to say what is in my heart, the words ‘never enough time’ are echoing inside my mind.

Life is full of irony, and so often the irony is tragic. I hate being a downer, just not my style. But emotion, same as life, has more than a single flavor.

So today I’m listening to Jim Croce. And missing someone whom I loved dearly. Be at peace, dear heart.

An ode to Cora’s “Pinkie”

October 8th, 2008

Oh Pinkie, you were such a naughty girl to be so beautiful. Sleek contours and fancy software. It is such a shame you and Cora could not get along. Fare thee well, dearest Pinkie.

Speaking of computers and gender…

my sister sent me this joke which I must share.
A Spanish teacher
was explaining to her class
that in Spanish, unlike English,
nouns are designated as either
masculine or feminine.

‘House’
for instance,
is feminine:
‘la casa.’

‘Pencil,’
however,
is masculine:
‘el lapiz.’

A student asked,
‘What gender is ‘computer’?’

Instead of giving the answer,
the teacher split the class into two groups,
male and female,
and asked them to decide
for themselves whether
‘computer’ should be
a masculine or a feminine noun.

Each group was asked
to give four reasons
for its recommendation.

The men’s group decided that
‘computer’
should definitely be
of the feminine gender
(’la computadora’),
because:
1. No one but their creator
understands their internal logic;

2. The native language
they use to communicate
with other computers is
incomprehensible to everyone else;

3. Even the smallest mistakes
are stored in long term memory
for possible later retrieval; and

4. As soon as you make
a commitment to one,
you find yourself spending
half your paycheck
on accessories for it.

(THIS GETS BETTER!)

The women’s group,
however, concluded
that computers should be Masculine(’el computador’),
because:
1. In order to do anything
with them,
you have to turn them on;

2. They have a lot of data
but still can’t think for themselves;

3. They are supposed
to help you solve problems,
but half the time
they ARE the problem; and

4. As soon as you commit to one,
you realize that if you
had waited a little longer,
you could have gotten
a better model.

The women won.

So, You Wanna Be A Mermaid?

October 6th, 2008

I stumbled upon this really great video on You Tube, showing how to do mermaid make-up for Halloween. Thanks for my pal Cora Zane for pointing out that such things exist on You Tube.

Make-up tip. Who’d a thunk. :P

Check it out…
